About us German Caritas

Our Main Fields of Work

Caritas is the largest welfare association in Germany. More than one million people work as paid employees or volunteers in our 25,000 centres and institutions nationwide. We support thirteen million people every year in overcoming different social problems and difficult situations.

Global Movement

Working in Solidarity for a Fairer World

Caritas is more than just organised charity work. The idea of Caritas is alive wherever people help each other in the spirit of Jesus Christ. This work can be done inside or outside church communities, professionally or by volunteers, spontaneously or in a more organised fashion. Mehr

The main purpose at the heart of Caritas’ work is to provide real help to people in need. Caritas has more than 25,000 centres and institutions in Germany where people can get professional support and guidance to help them cope with and overcome their problems. Mehr

Speaking Out for People on the Margins

Caritas is actively involved in the shaping of social policy in Germany. We speak out on the behalf of disadvantaged people and promote the development of fairer living conditions. Caritas openly criticises any signs of dwindling solidarity in society and encourages social action based on solidarity and Christian values. Mehr

Caritas Trains Professional Caregivers

The key to providing high quality services is making sure our workers and volunteers are professionally trained and educated according to the latest standards. Mehr

Help by the millions

The numbers are impressive: 739.410 professionals work in the 25.453 facilities and services associated with Caritas throughout Germany. They are supported by several hundreds of thousands volunteers. These were the findings of the most recent survey conducted by Caritas on 31 December 2022 (released in 2024). Mehr

Solidarity Worldwide

The International Department of Caritas Germany – within Germany called "Caritas international" – performs the international relief work of Germany’s largest Catholic welfare organisation. Mehr
