The German Caritas Association as an Umbrella Organization

The German Caritas Association has personal, corporate, and associated corporate members. The German Caritas Association strengthens and promotes its members’ possibilities for self-representation and participation.

The German Caritas Association is an umbrella organization as well as a local organization. As such, the German Caritas Association supports and promotes the work of its branch and member organizations. As one of the leading private social welfare organizations, the German Caritas Association represents the interests of member organizations at the federal level.Caritas branch organizations fulfill the functions of a leading organization at their respective levels.

Caritas in the German Dioceses

Diocesan Caritas Associations in Germany are institutional associations recognised by an (arch-)bishop as representing the Catholic welfare organisation in his diocese. Mehr

Specialised Charity Organisations

The following specialised Catholic charity organisations (Fachverbände) were founded at the end of the 19th century by people striving to act in the spirit of social solidarity. These organisations focus on preventive, outreach and follow-up social work as well as residential care services. Mehr

In order to maintain a unified platform for voicing their interests, the providers of Caritas’ centres and institutions form central specialised organisations representing charity facilities joined together on the basis of their field of work (Einrichtungsfachverbände). Mehr
